Baraka April 29, 2008

Baraka - French Mediteranian
Potrero Hill
288 Connecticut St San Francisco, CA 94107 (415) 255-0370

Baraka has changed hands. The same decor, but much more approachable than before. The have many small plates in addition to main dishes. We had warm pistachio-crusted goat cheese with onion jam, honey and served with crustini. Mom and I agreed we could live on this. We also had the yellowfin carpaccio served over horseradish creme fraiche, little tiny cubes of bravant potatoes, smoked sea salt, and parsley emulsion. It was a beautiful dish that had so many dimensions to it that it's hard to describe. We ordered one main dish to split - Housemade saffron fettucini with wild mushrooms, black pepper and pecorino. We both thought this was hands down the BEST pasta dish we have ever tasted.

We had our ususal sashimi combo with edamame and miso soup. We also tried a special of tempura fried white fish on lettuce with a mango salsa... can you say YUM? Martin asked the owner to make a seared ahi with sesame seeds. They made a fantastic dish with Martin's suggestion.

Bar Bambino April 22, 2008

Bar Bambino - Italian (ish)
2931 16th Street 415.701.VINO

... can't wait to go back. This place only has appetizers and small plates and everything looks good. Starting with a cheese plate (Sierras del Fen, Roncal, Crater Lake Blue), we also received an education of cheese from an expert who served it. We had the Roasted Beet and Arugula salad with filbert nuts and goat cheese. Then we had a meatball, but with no meat. It was a breaded ball that contained eggplant, pine nuts, rasins and covered in a light tomato sauce. Perfect!! To accompany it, we had grilled crispy artichoke hearts. Antica Masseria Primitivo was our favorite wine. Looking forward to next time.

Moshi Moshi April 21, 2008

Moshi Moshi - Sushi

And, yet another wonderful meal at Moshi Moshi. Martin's trick is putting the Shichimi Togarashi red pepper mix on most of what he eats at any sushi bar. We got the Rock n Roll which is a California Roll with unagi, tobiko and wrapped in sesame soy paper.
They had a special called Negi Toro Salad which was marinated fatty tuna chopped with scallions and shiso on romaine lettuce, serving two at a time. We loved this, it was so fresh! We ordered it two times and then asked if they would make the same thing but with Salmon. They said sure but it wouldn't be marinated. It was delicious with a little soy sauce on top... SO FRESH! We also had shrimp tempura which is always a special treat.

Medjool, Tuesday April 15, 2008

Medjool - Mediterranean (North African, Southern European, Middle Eastern)

2522 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110
(415) 550-9055

Mom and I went to this brightly colored restaurant and sat in the lounge - the music was very nice and it was perfectly lit. We had the Filo wrapped sea bass, with eggplant and roasted red pepper sauce - perfectly cooked and very tasty. Another dish was Preserved lemon baby artichoke salad, haloumi cheese sticks, lebni. Great salad and the cheese sticks were awesome (they are the things that look like strips of grilled chicken)! We ordered the Dungeness crab filled falafel with fresh tomato and tahini sauce - great falafel but the taste of the crab was completely lost in the flavors of the falafel. Our favorite was the Fried sumac-dusted calamari, red onions and lemons with aioli. They fried thinly sliced lemons!!! It was delicious, all of it! There is so much more to try so we anticipate our next visit to Medjool.

Moshi Moshi Monday April 14, 2008

Moshi Moshi - Sushi
2092 3rd St San Francisco, CA 94107 (415) 861-8285

My first entry has to be Moshi Moshi. This is a sushi restaurant that my husband, Martin, and I frequent most Monday nights. We love coming to Moshi Moshi for many reasons. Recently, a special was named after me because I raved about it. The Veg Julie is the best veggie roll we have ever had. It's a must have, even though you are at sushi joint for fish.

Tonight we enjoyed the sushi combo, shrimp tempura, veg Julie, ginger marinated fried chicken salad, edamame and miso soup. And, as a special treat, we had a flight of sake. Highly recomended!
